Living as a "Called Person" 7/23/17 Sermon

1 Corinthians 7:17-24
Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches. Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man uncircumcised when he was called? He should not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts. Each person should remain in the situation they were in when God called them. Were you a slave when you were called? Don’t let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. For the one who was a slave when called to faith in the Lord is the Lord’s freed person;similarly, the one who was free when called is Christ’s slave. You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings. Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.

A)    Living with a Frame of Reference

Man requires two things:
1)     Object of Worship
2)     Frame of reference

“Man needs a map of his natural and social world without which he would be confused and unable to act. He would have no way of orienting himself” - Eric Fromm

Titus 3:3-6
At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior

Romans 5:1
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

B)    A Summons/Invitation to Life

“Nevertheless, each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him”

Peripateo: to walk (around), to live, conduct one’s life

“Each one remain in the situation God called him to.”

Klesis: Invitation, a call, , bid or summons

1 Corinthians 1:26-29
Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.

Ephesians 4:1:2
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

1)     Kingdom of heaven is within you

Luke 17:20-21
Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”

2)     Non-reliance upon externals

Matthew 23:25-26
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

3)     Live with a different "Frame of reference or orientation"

1 Peter 2:11
Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.

4)     Live responsible to God’s call

1 Peter 1:17
Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.

5)     I will be held accountable

Romans 14:12
So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God

        C) You were bought at a price, you are not your own

1 Corinthians 6:19:20
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

1 Peter 1:18:19
For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect

What Defines You? 7/16/17 Sermon

Pastor Rob Neuschwander gave a sermon with the main question being "what defines you?" It's a simple yet deep question.
A verse that he focused in on is
Psalm 109:1-4.
God, whom I praise,
    do not remain
silent, for people who are wicked and deceitful have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues. With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause. In return for my friendship they accuse me,
but I am a man of prayer.

What defines you will determine:
1)     What you think about
2)     How you will behave
3)     How you treat others
                           4)     Determine your relationship with God

There is:
Who you are at your core
Who you represent yourself to be
The degree of disparity between these two schemas will determine your integrity

A)    What are you thinking about?
“Our lives consist of what we are thinking about all day” Emerson

Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will

 Ephesians 4:22-24
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

2 Corinthians 10:5
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

2 Timothy 1:7
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

B)    How you will be behave

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Romans 6:6-7
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

Romans 6:11
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2:4-6
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus

C)     How you will treat others

If self perception is:
1)     Powerless - You will seek to control
2)     Guilt and Shame - You will punish others
3)     Insecure - You will seek control, power ,and image
4)     Failure - You will sabotage success
5)     Poor - Stingy, Greedy, Hoard, Non-Generous
6)     Filled with Grace - You will be Forgiving, let others off the hook
7)     Secure - Image won’t matter, open to life, filled with personal power, little or no need to control others
8)     Forgiven - Merciful, Loving , Kind

D)    How you relate to God

Philippians 3:7-9
But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.

iPray

What is iPray? iPray is an app for smartphone users that allows you set reminders to pray and also allows you to connect with others so they too can pray for you or a situation in your life, as you can also see what they need prayer with.

Creator of iPray - Giancarlo Newsome
"Prayer has always meant a whole lot to me on a very deep level. In my own community of faith I had a friend that was going into the mission field and you know I did the curiosity 'I'll pray for you.' And she looked me in the eyes and said 'No you won't' and I said 'You know what you're right. I'm going to totally forget.' It wasn't that I didn't have the will to, it's that she knew I didn't have the discipline or a systematic way that she had seen that I had done it in the past. So ever since then I've tried to be diligent. I've created lists on my phone with the notepad. When I commit to pray for someone I write it down and I even do try to get back to them and check on the prayer. So the iPray app just facilitates that. It's just a tool."
